Lufthansa customers must expect flight cancellations and delays due to a strike by ground staff on Wednesday. The Verdi union has called on Lufthansa’s ground staff to go on an all-day warning strike on Wednesday because of what they believe is a too low wage offer.

As Verdi announced, the strike at the Lufthansa locations in Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Düsseldorf will begin at 4:00 a.m. and last until Thursday at 7:10 a.m. Lufthansa stated that the length and extent of the warning strike was completely incomprehensible.

In total, thousands of flights with more than 100,000 passengers were affected.

“We assume that 80, 90 percent of the Lufthansa program and that of its subsidiaries will be discontinued,” said a Verdi spokesman. Around 400 Lufthansa flights are planned for Wednesday at Munich Airport alone – it is likely that the majority of the planned flights will not be able to take place.

Meanwhile, Lufthansa’s special flight plan for the day of the strike on Wednesday appears to be taking shape. Lufthansa wants to fly 10 to 20 percent of its original flight schedule during the planned warning strike by its ground staff. The 100 to 200 connections possible this Wednesday are intercontinental as well as continental flights, said a spokesman for the German Press Agency.

The details would be entered into the database on the Lufthansa website and passengers would be informed accordingly.

While the effects will be felt primarily in Frankfurt and Munich, airports such as Berlin, Düsseldorf and Hamburg are expected to be only slightly affected. During this period, Lufthansa only has twelve scheduled departures from Düsseldorf to Munich and five to Frankfurt. Eurowings, which relies more heavily on Düsseldorf, says it is not affected.

Eurowings will carry out the flight program in full as planned, said a spokesman for the Lufthansa subsidiary. As a result of the strike measures, “individual irregularities in operations could occur,” the company spokesman continued.

Eurowings has other service partners in Düsseldorf. However, a Verdi spokesman pointed out that tractor drivers from a Lufthansa subsidiary also pull the Eurowings aircraft onto the apron. If there are staff shortages in this area, there could still be delays in Eurowings flights.

Demands for more salary

The union is demanding 12.5 percent more salary and at least 500 euros per month for a term of twelve months for the approximately 25,000 Lufthansa employees on the ground. There will also be an inflation compensation bonus of 3,000 euros for employees.

“This strike would be unnecessary if Lufthansa were to grant ground workers the same increases as other employee groups in the company,” said Verdi’s negotiator Marvin Reschinsky. Verdi hopes that the passengers will understand, because an end to the staff shortage and better service is also in their interest.

According to the union, an inadequate offer has been presented in the negotiations so far. Specifically criticized are eight zero months, low increase increments from September, the 36-month term and completely unanswered demands.

For example, the offer provides for an average increase of less than two percent in the first year, said Verdi. Lufthansa wants to pay employees outside of the maintenance subsidiary Lufthansa Technik a lower inflation compensation bonus.

Lufthansa estimates higher offer

Lufthansa puts its offer at a good 13 percent over three years, in addition to inflation compensation bonuses of 3,000 and 2,000 euros. Including the increases in the previous round of collective bargaining, employees would have around 25 percent more money. According to their information, there are around 20,000 employees at Lufthansa AG, Technology and Cargo.

Human resources director Michael Niggemann accused the union of irresponsibility. “We all share responsibility for good, sustainable jobs for our colleagues in a tough international competitive environment.” Constructive and viable solutions can only be achieved at the negotiating table.

The next round of negotiations will take place on February 12th in Frankfurt. Strikes by ground workers had a massive impact on flight operations during the last collective bargaining round. In July 2022, a strike by ground staff largely paralyzed air traffic at the Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.

On Sunday, pilots from Discover Airlines stopped work again and also went on strike. This will continue throughout Monday (February 5th).
