With King Charles III. has been diagnosed with cancer, Buckingham Palace announced on Monday evening. It is not prostate cancer, but the new disease was discovered during his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate, as the BBC reports.

The palace is once again dealing with the illness unusually openly. It is not known exactly what form of cancer Charles (75) has and how advanced the disease is. It’s not supposed to be prostate cancer. Actually, medical information is generally considered private. When Charles’ daughter-in-law Princess Kate (42) recently underwent abdominal surgery, the diagnosis remained secret.

The king decided to inform about his diagnosis in order to avoid speculation, the palace said. In addition, according to the statement, Charles hopes to raise more understanding for all those around the world who are themselves suffering from cancer. Charles is said to have informed his two sons, heir to the throne Prince William and Harry, as well as his siblings about the diagnosis.

Biden: “I’m worried about him”

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished Charles a full and speedy recovery. He wrote on Platform

Good wishes also came from the USA. “Our thoughts are, of course, first and foremost with the king, with the king and his family,” said Vedant Patel, deputy spokesman for the US State Department. “This is incredibly sad news.”

US President Joe Biden has also expressed concern about the cancer diagnosis. “I’m worried about him,” Biden said when asked on Monday on the sidelines of an appointment in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to reporters traveling with him. He had only recently found out about the diagnosis and hoped to be able to speak to Charles soon – “God willing”.

Charles will postpone his public appearances and other senior royals are expected to represent him during his treatment. However, he will continue to fulfill his role as head of state.
