Sometime in the fall of 1993 the following letter arrived in the mailbox of the English music magazine “Melody Maker”. “There is something fundamentally wrong with your magazine. You cover indie, dance and American rock very well, but your pretense of diverse coverage will have no cover until you finally decide to stand up to the big, bad demon – black music,” charged the writer of the letter, who identified himself as Clifford S. Calvin. “You invented the division between white and black music,” he clarified immediately. “Most of us can zigzag between ‘Mercury Rav’ and Miles Davis to ‘Onyx’ and ‘Young Gods’ without blinking. You, it seems, can’t. In the six or seven years I’ve been reading ‘Melody Maker’ the color of the artist has determined how you wrote about him” .
