Alfons Schuhbeck changes prison | HOGAPAGE News

Star chef Alfons Schuhbeck has been moved to another prison. Since Monday he has been in a branch of the Landsberg am Lech correctional facility (JVA), in Rothenfeld in Andechs, the JVA confirmed on Tuesday upon request.

“Bild” had previously reported on it. The paper also wrote that Schuhbeck was now released and was therefore allowed to leave the institution temporarily. However, the judiciary did not provide any information on this, citing personal rights. Schuhbeck’s lawyers also did not comment.

A spokeswoman for the prison told the radio station “Antenne Bayern” that only prisoners who “have no fear of escape or abuse” may be transferred to the open prison in Rothenfeld. The decision on this and on admission to release rests with the responsible department head.

Decision

Millions of dollars in tax evasion

In October 2022, Schuhbeck was sentenced to three years and two months in prison by the Munich I Regional Court for tax evasion amounting to millions. According to the regional court, Schuhbeck evaded 2.3 million euros.

The prominent restaurateur took action and appealed against the verdict – although he had largely stood by the court after some hesitation. However, the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in Karlsruhe largely confirmed the judgment in June. The BGH ruled that it was “essentially legally binding”.

For a long time it was unclear whether he would be taken into custody

For a long time it was unclear when Schuhbeck would have to begin his prison sentence. “I don’t know when the time will come,” the top chef told the media group “Münchner Merkur/tz” on August 14th. At that time, Schuhbeck was still waiting to be summoned to prison. According to “Merkur,” one reason for this could have been that the judicial authorities wanted to give Schuhbeck time to sort out his personal matters.

Last August, Schuhbeck finally had to begin his prison sentence.

Before the ruins of a great career

Schuhbeck, who has already cooked for celebrities such as Queen Elizabeth II, Charlie Chaplin and the FC Bayern players, was faced with the ruins of a great, long career after the verdict and the bankruptcy of his restaurants. All that remained were his spice shops, which were managed by the Schuhbecks Company and over which there were repeated disputes due to non-payment of rent.
