Babiniotis calls for the abolition of the inhumane Panhellenic and an academic diploma

The abolition of the pan-Hellenic exams for admission to higher education is requested by George BabiniotisEmeritus Professor of Linguistics and former Rector of the University of Athens.

“There is a fixed, but unfair system. It is inhumane. Just think that within three hours the fate of a child is judged, if he has an anxiety disorder, if he has an illness… If he doesn’t do well in a lesson, he will come back after a year”, pointed out the professor, speaking to SKAI 100.3.

“Let what applies everywhere apply to Greece as well. The image of the student as it emerges from the three years of study at the Lyceum to give the “shape” of the student with an academic, so to speak, high school diploma, as long as necessary for a period of time, there may be a system of exams, to complete, however, because the entrance will be based mainly on the performance in the baccalaureate. And so that there are no backtracks and deviations, there is the Subject Bank, which is central and gives an objective basis to the students’ performance. If this system changes we will find the High School again. The admission basis will be based on the high school grade, and in a school with great demand there could be a supplementary exam, which will complement your score, the exam will not determine everything.” Giorgos Babiniotis explained and emphasized that the Lyceum has fallen into disuse, obsolescence, and under-functioning.

“There is no education. What is there? There is a level of quasi-informal tutoring that is unreliable even for the students themselves, who go to tutoring and tutoring, a situation that cannot go on any longer.”
