A winter storm in the southern and midwestern United States has disrupted air travel and caused power outages in tens of thousands of homes. States like Tennessee, Texas and Ohio were particularly affected on Thursday. Around 5,000 flights were canceled nationwide, according to the FlightAware.com portal. Dallas/Fort Worth Airport in Texas, for example, was particularly hard hit. Due to icy runways, air traffic has been suspended there in the meantime. The winter storm continued to move northeast as the day progressed. The weather service warned of hurricanes in the southern states of Mississippi and Alabama.
