Galatasaray was expected to be a favorite in the round of 16 of the Turkish Cup. The record winner of the competition defeated the second division team Teksüt Bandirmaspor 4-2 with some difficulty at their home RAMS Park. Coach Okan Buruk rotated a lot, so that we saw an unusual starting eleven. Among other things, new signing Carlos Vinicus celebrated his debut for the Istanbul team, where Davinson Sanchez gave them a 1-0 lead with a header in the 26th minute after a corner from youngster Eyüp Aydin. Shortly afterwards, Levent Aycicek crossed into the penalty area on the other side and found captain Dogan Can Davas (28th), whose header was parried on the line by Galatasaray goalkeeper Günay Güvenc.
Two VAR penalties for Galatasaray – Picincio gives Bandirma hope
In the 31st minute, Bandirma goalkeeper Akin Alkan blocked a shot from Wilfried Zaha. When attempting a follow-up shot, Zaha fell due to the use of Alkan, at least this was what referee Muhammet Ali Meteoglu indicated after examining the VAR images and consequently awarded a penalty. Halil Dervisoglu (36th) took the penalty and made it 2-0. Just moments later, the VAR was back in action and found a handball by Mehmet Özcan in the penalty area (38′), so referee Meteoglu pointed to the spot again. This time Tete came in (40th) and made it 3-0 for the home team with a penalty. In injury time of the first half, Emre Adigüzel played a pass behind the “Gala” defense. Sergen Picinciop (45th + 3) shot from the left diagonal in the penalty area and scored the 1:3 goal for Bandirma before the break.

In the second half, Levent Aycicek beat Kazimcan Karatas on the right wing and crossed into the penalty area. Bari’s Alper Yilmaz lost the fight for the ball and Mustafa Cecenoglu, who came on at the beginning of the second half (60th), scored the supposed 2:3 with a hard shot. But the VAR intervened again and showed that the ball had hit Aycicek’s arm during the attack, so it was ruled a handball and the hit didn’t count. Remi Mulumba’s goal made it 2-3 in the 77th minute. Aycicek took a set piece from the right wing and crossed high in front of the goal, where Mulumba rose highest and headed it in. But the underdogs’ rebellion ended in stoppage time when Tete crossed after a quick attack from the right side of the penalty area and his Brazilian compatriot Vinicius was completely free to make the final score 4-2.
