The La Vitxeta School is experiencing déjà-vu. As happened in 2015 and was repeated last year, the Department of Education of the Generalitat of Catalonia has reported that the center’s offer will be a group of I3 for the 2024-25 academic year, that is, there will be a line less than today, according to Canal Reus and Diari Més has been able to confirm.
Sources from the Department detail that the offer adjustments “are made within the framework of the fight against segregation, following the criteria of the Segregation Pact” and in compliance with the guidelines of decree 11/2021, of February 16, of the programming of the educational offer and the admission procedure in the centers of the Education Service of Catalonia, “which emphasize the importance of avoiding oversupply.”
For their part, sources around La Vitxeta comment that it is due to “the low birth rate.” Additionally, Education emphasizes that the decision has been made “unanimously at the Local Planning Board, where the City Council also participates.”
From the Association of Mothers and Fathers of Students (AMiPA) of the center, they explain that the confirmation came to them on Tuesday afternoon and they assure that Education hides behind zoning, that is, that in the area where the school is located there are not enough students to cover the offer of places, without taking into account that “we know that the lines would fill up” because “La Vitxeta has an educational model that is unique and a reference in Reus and people go looking for it even if it is outside their area.”
In the coming days, the educational community will meet and determine what actions to take to try to reverse the situation. Canal Reus adds that the Government does not rule out eliminating more lines in the city, specifically, in the Sant Bernat Calvó and General Prim schools.
The memory of the past
When last year the Generalitat informed La Vitxeta that it would close an I3 line, the students’ families did not take long to coordinate to prevent it by collecting signatures, among other actions. In the previous 2015, they called for mobilizations until Education promised to maintain the two groups if a minimum pre-registration was reached.
