Despite a lot of desire, União de Leiria received and was unable to hold off Sporting in the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup. Viktor Gyokeres opened the scoring after taking a corner kick and Pedro Gonçalves made it 2-0 after a great game of Leonine involvement.
União de Leiria had a great opportunity in Jair Matheus to reduce it but the player from Leiria was unable to hit the goal. After some substitutions made by Rúben Amorim, Sporting improved again in the last 15 minutes and reached 3-0 through the now inevitable Viktor Gyokeres.
The Swede took the opportunity to respond, at the far post, to a corner kick that passed through the entire Leiria area. The forward has scored 26 goals in 28 games played and also had one more assist (for Pedro Gonçalves’ goal).
With this result, Sporting is the first semi-finalist in the Portuguese Cup, after FC Porto’s game with Santa Clara was suspended due to the bad weather on the island of São Miguel. Tomorrow, Vizela hosts Benfica and Vitória de Guimarães will face Gil Vicente in the remaining quarter-final games of the premier competition of Portuguese football.
