Politicians today do things that we thought were forbidden. They rise up green and mature in power, they imprison their competitors and win elections, they place gangsters as judges and legislators and they become eternal. It happens everywhere, even in Spain, a member of the European Union.
The socialist Pedro Sánchez lost the elections, but he built a majority by bringing together all the damned politicians: fugitives, terrorists, separatists, communists, all of them are receiving the agreed price to hand over power to him. He does not really govern, he is a fugitive from justice from Belgium demanding pardons, amnesties, changes in laws, control of budgets, immigration and police; review of judicial rulings and punishment for the judges who convicted him.
Our youngest president came to power with a political miracle that has not been explained. In the electoral campaign he did not confront anyone, he assured that he would not raise taxes, that he would guarantee citizen security and that he would keep prisoners floating in the sea.
Once in power, he has become loquacious, declared war and raised taxes. We do not know who Daniel Noboa is; He is at that point from which he can become a statesman or from which another authoritarian can appear. He can do the same thing as everyone or surprise everyone.
He will be a statesman if he overcomes the pressures of interest groups; if he goes beyond electoral politics and seeks the change that everyone promises and no one delivers; if he reduces public spending, eliminates the parasites that live off the State and encourages productive and job-generating companies; if he discovers the Ecuador of wonders for whom he works.
It can become authoritarian if it is caught by the honeys of power; if he begins to see reality as the sycophants paint it; if he begins to see Ecuadorians as submissive or seditious, friends or enemies; if he is seduced by his own speech and ends up believing that re-election is more important than the election.
