Can we avoid a new psychodrama? While three railway workers’ unions filed a strike notice for the weekend of February 17/18, the CEO of SNCF got personally involved by promising new hires and an increase in wages.

Four hours of meeting between the management of SNCF Voyageurs and the unions on Wednesday evening, then three hours again on Thursday with the boss of the SNCF Jean-Pierre Farandou… At least that was necessary for the weekend of 17-18 February (in the middle of the holidays) does not turn into a disaster.

The CGT-Cheminots, Sud-Rail and CFDT-Cheminots believe that the crisis exit agreement negotiated at the end of 2022 is slow to be implemented. “The agreement of the captains is largely respected,” contested Jean-Pierre Farandou. And to insist by ensuring that the promises of improved remuneration are in place “100%”… or almost. But “it is not a few minor and localized deviations in the application of the agreement which could prevent the French from going on vacation”.

That being said, Jean-Pierre Farandou made a few additional promises to satisfy all railway workers, and not just the crew chiefs.

“I have decided on the additional payment of 400 euros to recognize the work of the railway workers,” he announced. This exceptional bonus, which will be paid in March, is added to another of 400 euros already paid in December “in return for the satisfactory results expected in 2023”, he said.

Half satisfied, the unions did not lift their strike notice, but said they appreciated “having company management who wanted to discuss in a calm manner”. “Now, the measures must be implemented and made visible,” noted Thierry Nier, general secretary of the CGT-Cheminots, referring in particular to the promise of 1,000 additional hires made by Jean-Pierre Farandou .
