In Iran, the principal of an elementary school beat an 11-year-old girl because her hijab slipped off her head. Local media reports that this incident took place when the girl was helping at the gym.

“My daughter was picking up her sports uniform in class, when the headscarf slipped off her head”, – “Etemad” newspaper published in Tehran wrote on January 28 with reference to the girl’s mother. The student’s name has not been released.

“The director reacted violently and shot my daughter in the neck”the woman added.

The mother said that this violence caused panic attacks and severe anxiety in her child, she did not go to school for several weeks, and she herself complained to the police.

The Iranian medical expert confirmed that the child had physical injuries and said that compensation should be paid and psychological treatment should be given due to emotional trauma.

Hijab protests

In Iran, the hijab was made compulsory for girls and women over the age of 9 in 1981, two years after the Islamic revolution. Although this step caused protests, the authorities immediately suppressed them.

Women have been outside these rules for years. In the protests that started in September 2022, especially girls’ schools in Iran were shaken by disobedience due to the hijab. At that time, Mahsa Amini died after being stopped by the police for allegedly not tying the hijab properly, and this incident caused protests across the country.

The authorities launched a brutal attack on student campuses, and teachers who supported the demonstrations were either fired or imprisoned.

It is reported that at least 500 people, including 71 minors, were killed during the riots.

Thousands of protestors were detained and given the most severe punishments, including the death sentence.
