Azerbaijani MFA commented on Nikol Pashinyan’s statement

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) expressed its opinion on the proposal of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to sign a mutual arms control mechanism, as well as a non-aggression pact.

In the statement on the website of the ministry, it is noted that Pashinyan’s statement is aimed at distracting attention from the process of the draft bilateral agreement on the establishment of peace and interstate relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“…As Prime Minister Pashinyan also stated, it is political manipulation for Armenia to claim that it is serious about the peace process, taking into account that its country is pursuing a policy of serious militarization, several billion dollar arms supply contracts have been signed in recent years, and it has developed the military industry” – Aykhan Hajizadeh, press secretary of the ministry, emphasized.

In his opinion, such “biased” statements hinder the further development of the region based on respect for the norms and principles of international law:

“Azerbaijan, in its turn, will continue its peace and construction efforts, and expects Armenia to take adequate steps, not only in words, but also in deeds.”

Nikol Pashinyan In his speech, he talked about the mutual withdrawal of troops from the border offered by Yerevan to Azerbaijan.

“The mutual withdrawal of troops will allow the territory of the Azerbaijan SSR to remain under the control of Azerbaijan, and the territory of the Armenian SSR to remain under the control of Armenia. We proposed the demilitarization of its borders, that is, demilitarization with Azerbaijan. “We have also offered to sign a pact on mutual arms control and non-aggression if the signing of the peace agreement takes longer than expected.”he said.

Pashinyan stressed that Armenia is committed to the peace agreement and will not withdraw from this agenda.

Official Baku has not yet expressed its attitude to Pashinyan’s latest proposal. However, the Azerbaijani authorities have repeatedly stated that they want peace with Armenia.
