American Abrams tanks will enter service with the Romanian ground forces in 2026.

As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, the Agerpres agency reported this with reference to official sources in the Ministry of Defense.

The ministry will attract Romanian specialized industries, which will provide comprehensive logistics support for supplies, the report notes.

The US Congress was notified last November of the sale to Romania of 54 Abrams M1A2 battle tanks in the SEPv3 version, 12 modifications of tank chassis, ammunition and training simulators. The estimated value of the contract is about $1.07 billion, according to preliminary approval by the Romanian Parliament.

In accordance with US law, the US Congress was notified of a higher initial cost of approximately $2.5 billion, Agerpres notes. Once the deal is approved by Congress, a contract will be signed between the Romanian and US governments, according to which the purchase will be made by the Romanian side at a price approved by the Romanian parliament.
