The punishment of Farman Jeyranli, the famous doctor and the head of the Lancet clinic in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, who was also targeted by the Azerbaijani government in the last few years, was aggravated just 20 days before his release from prison. On August 2, the Supreme Court of Georgia considered the case of F. Jeyranli and increased his sentence of 2 years and 3 months to 6 years.

It is interesting that F. Ceyranli himself applied to the Supreme Court, also to be acquitted. According to the law, if there is no complaint of the injured party or protest of the prosecutor to aggravate the punishment of the accused, the court cannot aggravate his situation on its own initiative.

F. Ceyranli has been in prison since May 22, 2017. He was arrested based on the complaint of a relative of a patient who died after a liver transplant at the “Lancet” clinic, and sentenced to 6 years in prison on charges of fraud, hiding information that endangers people’s lives and health. The Court of Appeal of Georgia later reduced his sentence to 2 years and 3 months. F. Ceyranli disagreed with this decision and appealed to the Supreme Court to be acquitted.

F. Jeyranli states that he was unjustly arrested on the order of Azerbaijan. The relatives of the doctor, who explained the reason for his arrest by his closeness to the opposition of Azerbaijan, believe that the forces that did not allow him to be released this time achieved their wishes by influencing the Supreme Court of Georgia: “Or how could an institution like the Supreme Court sign such a violation of the law? If there is no protest or complaint of the victim, the higher court cannot aggravate the punishment given to the person. But they trampled the law.”
F. Ceyranli was also searched by the Main Directorate for Combating Human Trafficking of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) in Azerbaijan. He is accused of kidney trafficking. It is claimed that the operations related to kidney transplants were carried out at the “Lancet” clinic headed by him.

F. Ceyranli rejects both the accusations given as the official reason for his arrest in Georgia and the allegations spread about the reason for his arrest in Azerbaijan. In a statement released some time ago, he said that the organ transplant department of the “Lancet” medical center operated in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization and the rules stipulated in the laws of Georgia. According to him, during the organ transplant operation, all the necessary legal documents were received from the persons and the operation was carried out legally.

“I was arrested by order of the Azerbaijani authorities, they searched me even though they knew I was in prison. They open the open door. They are already overstepping their bounds…” said F. Jeyranli.

F. Ceyranli has lived in Azerbaijan since the 1980s, studied and worked there. In 1994, he worked as the deputy director of the Scientific Surgery Center named after M. Topchubashov, and since 1995, he has worked as the director of that center. He went to Georgia a few years ago.

Several of the socio-political activists in Azerbaijan were examined and treated at the “Lancet” clinic, headed by him, in Georgia. The media outlets close to the government of Azerbaijan have repeatedly published slanderous articles about him.
