The saga surrounding the succession at the head of the BEAC is perhaps coming to an end. According to our colleagues at Week Infos, the name of the next governor of the central bank should be revealed this Friday, February 10, putting an end to weeks of uncertainty since the departure of Abbas Mahamat Tolli.
It is a soap opera that has lasted long enough on the side of the Bank of Central African States (BEAC). But it should know its epilogue this Friday, February 10 if we are to believe the indiscretions obtained by our colleague Week Infos. The name of the next governor of the institution should indeed be revealed in the coming hours.
Tolli’s term expires
As a reminder, Abbas Mahamat Tolli had reached the end of his mandate at the head of the BEAC since February 4. Despite this, the Chadian refused to leave his chair, despite calls to order from the Director General of Control at the BEAC Blaise Eugène Nsom.
A situation of vagueness which has lasted quite a while, while the position of governor must imperatively be filled to ensure the continuity of the operational management of the central bank common to the six CEMAC countries.
A Central African successor announced
It is therefore to put an end to this vacuum that the process of designating his successor is about to be completed according to Week Infos. And according to our particularly well-connected colleagues, the position should this time go to a Central African national.
An appointment more than ever expected as the BEAC goes through a delicate patch, between institutional tensions and immense economic challenges to revitalize a CEMAC zone undermined by the crisis and economic slump. The new governor is therefore warned: he will have a lot to do!
