The Ministry of Youth and Civic Education (MINJEC) launched a training workshop for 350 young parliamentarians on February 7 as part of the 7th edition of the Youth Parliament. Objective: to strengthen their knowledge of civics and their civic engagement.

It is within the confines of the National Museum of Yaoundé that Minister Mounouna Foutcou launched this training intended for 350 young people, including 180 “deputies” and 100 “senators”, coming from the 10 regions of Cameroon.

Training in Moral and Civic Rearmament

For two days, these young people aged 15 to 35 will follow training modules as part of the national Moral and Civic Rearmament program (PRONEC-REAMORCE) of the MINJEC.

On the menu in particular: reminder of republican and patriotic values, presentation of the issues of social cohesion and peacebuilding, or awareness of the societal role of young people in a plural nation like Cameroon.

Towards young development actors

Through this training followed by exchanges with political decision-makers and civil society actors, the objective is to “promote the voluntary commitment of young deputies and senators in peacebuilding projects” according to the Minister of Youth.

It is also about giving them the ethical and civic benchmarks necessary to become “transformative social forces” and “development actors” in their respective communities, once their mandate as parliamentarians has ended.

The novelty of the “Young Upper Room”

This 7th edition of the Youth Parliament also presented the novelty of integrating for the first time a representation of the Upper House through the presence of 100 “Young Senators”.

An initiative which aims to strengthen democratic culture among this new generation of leaders in the making, in a Cameroon in the midst of a decentralization process. With the key being young people trained and ready to take over.
