Hungarian President Katalin Novak has resigned.
She did it because of the scandal in which she pardoned a man who covered up the sexual crimes of his boss at a children’s home. “I made a mistake,” Novak said in a televised statement. She has been in office since 2022 and is the first female president in Hungary’s history.
Novak’s resignation is a rare blow to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s party, which rules Hungary. Novak, a key ally of Orbán, is a defender of family values and human rights. Her resignation comes after days of protests against the pardon.
At least 1,000 people protested in Hungary’s capital yesterday demanding the resignation of President Katalin Novak over her decision to pardon a man convicted of complicity in covering up a case of sexual abuse at a children’s home, Reuters reported.
Novak decided to pardon more than 20 people in April last year, ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to the country, including the deputy director of a children’s home who helped the former director hide his crimes.
