Moldova has begun the first stage of technical work on joining the European Union. This was stated during a briefing by Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Kristina Gerasimov following her visit to Brussels, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“On February 7, we entered the first stage of technical work on Moldova’s accession to the EU. We have the deepest and closest relations with the EU in the modern history of our country. This stage represents the first practical step in the implementation of the historic decision of the EU Council in December – the assessment of national legislation in comparison with EU legislation,” the Deputy Prime Minister said. According to her, at the end of February a delegation of the Moldovan government will go to Brussels for the first analysis of the republic’s legislation in the field of justice and fundamental rights. She emphasized that the speed of rapprochement with the EU depends on the republic’s success in the field of justice.

Last August, the National Commission for European Integration of Moldova approved a plan to implement nine recommendations proposed by the European Commission to speed up the country’s accession to the EU, and a revision of local legislation was launched to ensure that it complies with EU standards. For its part, the opposition accused the authorities of failing to reform justice, criticizing lawlessness on the part of President Maia Sandu and the ruling Action and Solidarity Party.
