Ex-Dortmunder Haaland scored both goals in the triple winner’s 2-0 (0-0) win against Everton FC, with City initially climbing to the top with their sixth win in a row. Team manager Jürgen Klopp’s Reds countered with a 3-1 (1-1) win against Burnley FC.
For a long time, City found it very difficult to create scoring chances against their deep opponents. Only Haaland took the lead after a corner kick (71′). He secured the decision with a successfully completed counterattack (85th). They were the Norwegian’s goals number 72 and 73 in his 78th competitive game for Manchester – and his first in the Premier League in 77 days.
Diogo Jota made it 1-0 for Liverpool (31st). But shortly before the break, Dara O’Shea equalized for the relegation candidates (45th). Luis Diaz (52nd) and Darwin Nunez (79th) ensured the favorite victory.
In the bottom of the table, bottom team Sheffield United celebrated their third win in their 24th game of the season. The Blades won 3-1 at Luton Town and reduced the gap to the rescue bank to seven points.
