Damo Suzuki: The singer of “Can” has died

The death of the Japanese singer Damo Suzuki caused sadness in the world artistic and musical scene. The pioneer musician and iconic singer of the band “Can”, passed away at the age of 74.

The news was announced in an emotional announcement on the band’s social media accounts, but Suzuki’s cause of death was not disclosed, although he had been battling colon cancer for a decade.

“It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of our wonderful friend Damo Suzuki, yesterday, Friday, February 9, 2024,” the announcement reads. “His inexhaustible creative energy touched so many around the world, not only with Can, but also with the Network Tour that spanned all continents. Damo’s kind soul and cheeky smile will be forever missed.

He will be joined by Michael, Jaki and Holger for a fantastic jam!” the post concludes, referencing deceased Can members Michael Karoli (guitar), Jaki Liebezeit (drums) and Holger Czukay (bass and electronics).

Can’s original singer Michael Mooney had left after the release of their 1969 debut album, ‘Monster Movie’. Suzuki, who had left Japan as a teenager to travel to Europe, was a musician on the streets of Munich when Liebezeit and Czukay asked him to join the band’s stage that night.

He officially joined in 1970 and collaborated with the group on their most famous and influential albums: ‘Soundtracks’, 1971’s ‘Tago Mago’, 1972’s ‘Ege Bamyasi’ and 1973’s ‘Future Days’.
