Through a joint statement, the National Government and the Second Marquetalia armed organization have officially announced the beginning of a process of “sociopolitical dialogues” with a view to reaching a peace agreement in Colombia.

The announcement was made through a statement signed by the high commissioner for peace, Otty Patiño Hormaza.the commander of the Second Marquetalia, Ivan Marquez, and the ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to Colombia, Carlos Martinez Mendoza.

In the statement, both parties expressed their interest in developing “prior agreements for the de-escalation of the conflict.” and implementation of transformations for the social and environmental construction of the territory, definition of agenda and negotiation protocols.

In addition, they requested the intervention of the governments of the Republic of Cuba, of the Kingdom of Norway and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to facilitate the development of the process. Likewise, they asked the special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Colombia and the Episcopal Conference of Colombia for support in the process.

«We express our interest in promoting the formation of border zones of peace, in which new economies, non-predatory relationships with nature and the environment are stimulated, the rights of the population in general and ethnic peoples in general are respected and guaranteed. particular, and promote integration and fraternity between sister peoples and border nations,” reads the text of the statement.
