IDF Plans for Evacuating Rafah and Criticism from US Senate: Latest Updates

While the question of the entry of IDF forces into Rafah is on the table, the Israeli army has not yet presented to the government its plan for evacuating Rafah – this is what Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, spokesman for the IDF for foreign media, told CNN today (Tuesday).

“The government ordered the IDF to plan a plan to achieve our goals, our war goals in the Rafah area. The requested plan has not yet been presented to the government, of course,” Lerner explained. He also noted that the army aims to create a plan that will evacuate civilians “without harm” and differentiate between civilians and Hamas militants.

More than half of Gaza’s population is estimated to be in Rafah, with most people displaced from other parts of the enclave crammed into a makeshift tent city. “It can be done. We have confidence in our ability to differentiate,” Lerner said, admitting, however, that it “doesn’t come without a challenge.”

“We need to bring home the hostages, we need to bring them home now. We can do it, we’ve done it in the past. We’ve proven time and time again that we can move a mass amount of people out of harm’s way,” he said.
