Historic success for Bulgaria: a student in the 12th grade who participated in
programs of INSAIT, are among the authors of the article

Participants in the summer programs of the INSAIT Institute at Sofia University contributed to another success for Bulgaria in the field of artificial intelligence. Teodora Todorova, a student in the 12th grade of the Burgas Mathematical High School “Acad. Nikola Obreshkov” and ETH – Zurich graduate Anna Mikhalkova, who graduated from the Sofia Mathematical High School, registered their names among the authors of the AIStats 2024 conference. The forum will be held this May year in Valencia, the MES reports.

The project is led by Dr. Nikola Konstantinov and PhD student Nikita Tsoi, and Anna and Theodora join the team as part of their summer internship at INSAIT. Teodora is part of STARS, the internship program for talented Bulgarian students, and Anna becomes part of SURF, the international undergraduate research program of INSAIT.

AIStats (short for Artificial Intelligence and Statistics) is one of the world’s most renowned conferences in the field of artificial intelligence and statistics. Leading researchers and experts from universities and technology companies meet every year. Among the developments presented in previous editions of the conference are key components of modern neural networks, which are also used in products such as ChatGPT.

The INSAIT project presents new algorithms for creating artificial intelligence where each participant’s data is used to train the model without sharing that data. This is the first participation of a Bulgarian institution in the 39-year history of this prestigious scientific forum. The accepted article in AIStats can be considered a historic success for Bulgaria for another reason – Teodora is currently a student in the 12th grade and contributes to the preparation of scientific development at the world level. Anna’s success is also impressive – she is currently in her third year at one of the most renowned universities in the world – ETH – Zurich. INSAIT provides her with a real alternative after graduation to return to Bulgaria and develop world-class technologies.

After the success of the STARS and SURF programs, INSAIT is planning further initiatives with the aim of developing Bulgarian talents and keeping them in the country.
