  • The national tribute ceremony to Robert Badinter will be held on Wednesday, February 14, at noon, Place Vendôme in Paris, where the Ministry of Justice is located. The day before, the Senate and then the National Assembly paid tribute to the former Minister of Justice and Senator. Several hundred magistrates and lawyers also paid tribute, on Tuesday, on the steps of the Paris courthouse, to the memory of the former lawyer.
  • Robert Badinter’s family did not want the presence of elected officials from the National Rally (RN) and La France insoumise (LFI). A wish to which the RN will comply, unlike LFI, whose party will be represented by Caroline Fiat, vice-president of the National Assembly, and Eric Coquerel, president of the finance committee.
  • On the night of February 8 to 9, Robert Badinter died at his Parisian home, at the age of 95. A lawyer by profession, he was François Mitterrand’s minister of justice and the architect of the abolition of the death penalty in France in 1981. His political commitment was marked by his fight for the reintegration of prisoners, a series of developments in the penal code and its fight against anti-Semitism and homophobia. From 1986 to 1995, he chaired the Constitutional Council, then sat as senator for Hauts-de-Seine until 2011.
