After Paris, German cities will also impose higher parking fees for SUVs. From March, new prices will apply in Koblenz depending on the size of the vehicle.

Anyone wanting to park a crossover in the French capital will have to pay €18 per hour from September. 6 hours of parking in Paris will cost 225 euros. The new rate does not apply to Parisians, but only to people coming to the city.

The environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) thought this was a good idea and together with the environmental protection organization Greenpeace and the Association for the Protection of the Environment and Nature (BUND) called for similar rules to be introduced in larger German cities.

One of the first to introduce this since March is Koblenz. From March, a basic parking fee of €23.40 per year (0.45 per week) is introduced, which is multiplied by a variable factor based on vehicle dimensions. Unlike in Paris, the new prices will apply to residents of the city.

So drivers have to pay at least 100 euros per year. The jeep parking ticket costs much more. For the small Smart Fortwo, you will pay 104.87 euros for one year. Owners of the new VW Golf will have to shell out 179.12 euros each, and the price of the compact SUV Volkswagen Tiguan, which emits more CO2, will soon be 196.23 euros.
