No longer a coach at HSV: Tim Walter

Hamburger SV has separated from its coach Tim Walter after a good two and a half years. The club confirmed this to X.

“Sky” had previously reported. Accordingly, the club bosses of the third-placed team in the 2nd Bundesliga, led by sports director Jonas Boldt, have decided to continue with immediate effect without the 48-year-old on the sidelines. Instead, the previous assistant Merlin Polzin should take care of it.

The 33-year-old Polzin will look after the team at Hansa Rostock on Saturday. “He definitely gets the chance, and with full conviction,” said Boldt on Monday afternoon. Polzin has helped shape a lot in recent years. “Hence the belief that we have great coaching talent here.”

Polzin could become a permanent solution

Boldt left it open whether Polzin was a permanent solution or whether another coach could be hired. We don’t want to commit to any time frame,” said the 42-year-old. “Of course we will think about what medium and long-term solutions could be.

Merlin Polzin will definitely play a role in this.” The young trainer took on the task with “shining eyes and a completely clear yes,” Boldt reported on his conversation with Polzin. He said directly that he had an idea, “like we do now “Tackling things here”.

Polzin was in charge of the first training session in the afternoon. According to Boldt, the fact that he is just about to acquire his pro license, which is necessary for the Bundesliga, does not pose a problem with the regulations.

Failed to climb five times

The six-time German champions have already failed five times in their attempt to finally get promoted back to the first league. After the sporting misdevelopment of the past few months, the HSV management now apparently saw the danger of missing their big goal this season too.

Before Christmas, Walter was already on the brink. Then he received another clear order from sports director Boldt and sports director Claus Costa to stabilize his team.

Protests against DFL investor

Bicycle locks on the goal posts, crosshair posters in the guest block: the game between Hamburger SV and Hannover 96 is accompanied by massive fan protests.

However, eight goals conceded in the first two home games of the new year against Karlsruher SC (3:4) and Hannover 96 (3:4) showed that the coach couldn’t manage it.

Walter’s game with risk

Walter’s work and his self-confident demeanor in Hamburg were viewed ambivalently from day one. On the one hand, he failed in relegation twice with HSV: in 2022 against Hertha BSC, in 2023 against VfB Stuttgart. The lack of stability in his team, the risky style of play, the susceptibility to errors in defense: he was unable to get all of these problems under control in his third season.

After missing the climb

After missing out on promotion to the Bundesliga, HSV is once again faced with the question: continuity or upheaval? The fans’ answer is clear: move on with the coach and team.

On the other hand, Walter and sports director Jonas Boldt created a sense of togetherness and continuity at HSV that this chronically restless club had not experienced for years.

A majority of the players supported Walter’s offensive game idea until the end. Even after the second relegation loss this summer, it only took a few minutes for Boldt to publicly confirm the coach. This trust has now been used up.

Tim Walter should lead HSV back to the Bundesliga. His game idea seems uncompromising, his style is sometimes offensive. The team and club stand behind the “guy” and coach.07.05.2023 | 8:08 mins
