The seventh of February is the day of remembrance of the outstanding singer, People’s Artist of Azerbaijan Shovket Alakberova.

As Day.Az reports with reference to AZERTAC, the songs of Shovket Alekberova, who won the hearts of listeners not only with her high performing skills, but also with her charming and unique timbre of her voice, are today performed by her students, famous and young artists. Every song she has ever performed reminds us of the great luminary.

Shovket Alekberova was born on October 20, 1922 in Baku. Her father was a big music fan and her mother was a professional tar player. The children subsequently also received musical education. As a child, the future singer played the kamancha. In 1937, she won a singing competition, where her talent was appreciated by composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli and singer Bulbul. After a brilliant performance of “Karabakh Shikestesi”, Shovket Alekberova was accepted into the Azerbaijan State Choir. Her mentors were folklorist and teacher Agalar Aliverdibekov and opera singer Huseingulu Sarabsky.

During the Second World War, Alekberova went on tour to the front, singing patriotic songs and often performing up to fifty times a day. Since 1945 she worked at the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic. By that time, Shovket Alakberova had already been recognized as the most popular performer of Azerbaijani folk and pop songs. Her repertoire included the mugams “Seygah”, “Gatar”, “Shahnaz”, as well as songs by Azerbaijani composers and the peoples of Central Asia. Over the years of her work, she has toured more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. She performed successfully in France, Poland, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, India, Egypt and Algeria.

Shovket Alekberova died on February 7, 1993 in Baku.
