NATO allies are successfully implementing a plan to increase the defense spending of alliance members, the organization’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters, Day.Az reports with reference to Interfax.

“European allies and Canada have invested more than $600 billion in defense since defense commitments were announced in 2014. Last year, we saw an unprecedented 11% increase in such spending among European allies and Canada,” he said. .

“And this year I expect that 18 allies will spend at least 2% of GDP on defense spending, and these are yet another record figures,” Stoltenberg added.

NATO allies in Europe are expected to invest a total of at least $380 billion in defense in 2024.

“For the first time, this amount will be 2% of our total GDP. We are making real progress – European allies are spending more and more on defense,” he said.

Stoltenberg added that a number of countries still need to make additional efforts to increase such spending.
