The Federal Reserve System (FRS, central bank) of the United States may begin to lower the base interest rate later in 2024. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell announced this at a press conference, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“We believe our interest rate is probably at its peak <...>and if the overall economy develops as expected, it would seem appropriate to begin downward policy at some point this year,” Powell said.
However, he noted, a rate cut “too late or too small” could “inappropriately weaken economic activity and employment.” Such poor decisions could also undermine progress in the fight against inflation, the Fed chairman warned.
