The US Department of Justice announced that it had dismantled a hacking network linked to Russian intelligence, Reuters reported.
“For the second time in two months, we have prevented cyberattacks by foreign-sponsored hackers using compromised routers on US soil,” said US Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco.
The Justice Department said in January a court had authorized an operation to take down a network of hundreds of office and home routers controlled by Russian intelligence and used “as a cover and means of committing a wide range of crimes.”
“In this case, Russian intelligence services turned to criminal groups to help them hack home and office routers, but the Department of Justice thwarted their plan,” added Attorney General Merrick Garland, BTA reported.
He added that the Justice Department would increase its efforts to counter the Russian government’s cyber campaigns against the United States and its partners, including against Ukraine.
