It was in this situation that enforcement officials went to raid the house of Shahja Khan Sheikh in connection with the ration goods scam last month. The officials were severely beaten by supporters of Shahjahan Sheikh. Following this, Shahjahan Sheikh escaped from the authorities and is absconding. In this situation, the women of Sandeshkali village who were affected have lodged a police complaint against Shahjahan Sheikh and his accomplices, but the police ignored it. Enraged by this, the women are protesting. Poultry farms owned by an associate of Shahjahan Sheikh were set on fire by the protesters. As the protest has been going on for more than a month, there is a lot of tension in the area. As a result, 144 Prohibitory Order has been placed there.
The National Commission for Women, which went to Sandeshkali village to investigate, reported that many women in the area were physically and mentally abused by Trinamool Congress members and policemen. It has also accused the West Bengal government of lack of attention in this matter.
Subsequently, the Chairman of the National Listing Commission Arun Haldar and the members conducted a separate investigation. The inquiry report was handed over to President Thirelapathi Murmu yesterday (16.2.2024). In the report, atrocities were committed against the people of the Scheduled Castes in the village of Sandeshkali. To save them, it has been suggested that President’s rule should be imposed in West Bengal. As the parliamentary elections are coming up soon, there is great expectation as to what kind of action the President is going to take on this matter.
