The actress Johanna von Koczian is dead. She died at the age of 90 in her native Berlin, her former agent for the German Press Agency confirmed. The actress embodied an enormous range: she played in major theater classics and in small supporting roles in “In aller Friendship”.

Johanna von Koczian began her career in the theater, appearing on stage under Gustaf Gründgens, among others. Her film career began in 1957 with the comedy “Viktor and Viktoria”. She made her breakthrough in Kurt Hoffmann’s “We Wunderkinder” (1958) alongside Hansjörg Felmy. With Hoffmann she also made the Dürrenmatt film adaptation “The Marriage of Mr. Mississippi” (1961). She didn’t regret turning down the offer to go to Hollywood in the 1960s after her great successes in Germany: “I love German-language theater too much for that. I might have lost that and with it my roots,” said the actress of the “Leipziger Volkszeitung” in 2007.

She performed brilliantly in pieces by Kleist, Shakespeare and Lessing. But also played in supposedly shallow TV series such as “Praxis Bülowbogen” and “In aller Freunde”. She also made several appearances in series such as “The Dream Ship”, “The Country Doctor” and “Tatort”.

In the 1970s she had great success as a pop singer and appeared regularly on the ZDF hit parade. One of her best-known songs is the hit “The Little Household”.

Johanna von Koczian: Also an author and presenter

Johanna von Koczian wrote books and presented television shows such as “Do you recognize the melody?” At the age of 77, she achieved success in 2010 at Berlin’s Kudamm Theater, where the trained soprano starred in the comedy “Glorious!” played the “worst opera singer in the world”. The mother of one daughter was married to the music producer Wolfgang Kabitzky, who died in 2004, for almost 40 years. On Tuesday, at the age of 90, she passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family.
