Bundesliga bottom club SV Darmstadt 98 is slipping ever deeper into the relegation vortex. A 1:2 (0:1) defeat on Saturday in the home game against VfB Stuttgart extended South Hesse’s winless streak: The Lilies have now been without a win for 15 Bundesliga games in a row. This is a negative record for the club. Goalgetter Serhou Guirassy (14th) and Mahmoud Dahoud (90.2) scored the goals for the top team from Swabia. Aaron Seydel scored 1:2 (90+5).

The weakened Darmstadt team had to rebuild their starting eleven. Coach Torsten Lieberknecht brought in defender Christoph Klarer, Julian Justvan in attacking midfield and Luca Pfeiffer in attack. He formed the dual leadership with winter newcomer Sebastian Polter. Bartol Franjic took a seat on the bench. Matej Maglica and Tim Skarke were suspended.

Stuttgart shows class with a quick lead

Before kick-off, Lieberknecht had asked his team to surpass themselves in the game against the Swabians, who have been playing so furiously this season. But the guests showed their greatness in the early stages: strong in combinations, stable in their build-up – and, above all, cold-blooded when finishing on goal.

Goal scorer Guirassy, back from the Africa Cup, took advantage of his first chance. After confusion in the Lilien defense, the great striker from Guinea had little trouble heading the ball into the goal from two meters (14th). The defenders surrounding him were unable to prevent Guirassy from scoring his 18th goal of the season. It was further proof of why Darmstadt is the league’s shooting gallery. In 21 games they conceded 49 goals.

Mehlem-Knaller disallowed

A little later, the lily fans felt hopeful – but only for a short time. Marvin Mehlem hit the ball powerfully into the net from 15 meters. But the goal was disallowed because Sebastian Polter had previously made a handball when receiving the ball. It remained 0:1.

After around 17 minutes there was a long break in the game. Spectators threw tennis balls and other objects onto the lawn in protest against the German Football League (DFL). The fans don’t want the DFL to enter into a billion-dollar deal with an investor.

Pfeiffer failed at the VfB keeper

After almost 20 minutes of compulsory break with clean-up work, things continued – with a lot of fighting. The hosts tried to find their way into the game through commitment and passion. In this respect they certainly showed greatness. Lilien striker Pfeiffer missed the equalizer. VfB goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow parried his shot out of trouble (41′).

Darmstadt pushed for the equalizer. At times, VfB looked like a frightened hen. Waldemar Anton almost scored an own goal when trying to clear the ball. Shortly before the break the guests decimated themselves. Pascal Stenzel was shown a yellow-red card for foul play (45th + 22nd).

Stuttgart, outnumbered, trying to control

Stuttgart then tried to regain control of the game even when they were outnumbered. Pfeiffer had the next chance again. But he couldn’t push a Bredlow rebound over the line (59′). The game, which was wild at times, slowed down a bit, but continued to live off its excitement.

Lieberknecht brought in two fresh strikers, Seydel and Fabio Torsiello (74th). and launched an attack. But Darmstadt didn’t really get into good finishing positions. Woo-Yeong Jeong only hit the post for VfB. But then substitute Dahoud made everything clear for VfB (90th + 2) when he pushed in another rebound off the post. Seydel’s 1:2 was not enough in the end (90+5).

The gap to a non-relegation zone is now ten points for Darmstadt. It’s also bad for the Lilies: Mainz, as a direct competitor to stay in the league, won its home game against Augsburg and is now three points ahead of the southern Hesse team. Next Saturday Darmstadt has to play against SV Werder Bremen.
