DECRYPTION – Local elected officials from Côtes-d’Armor requested the Cuban embassy to set up a possible “brigade”. A meeting with the ambassador was organized on Friday.

For years, several departments at the Guingamp hospital, in Côtes-d’Armor, have been regularly threatened with closure. Due to a lack of doctors and nursing staff, the maternity ward has had to suspend deliveries since April 2023 and emergencies are now often regulated at night or during school holidays. The cardiology department is also on hold. A complicated situation for the Guingampais, which pushed Gaël Roblin, elected to the municipal council, to look for solutions. And it was with the Cuban ambassador, Otto Vaillant, that he found a lead.

On Twitter, in April 2023, he wrote to the Cuban embassy to request a medical team to back up the hospital in his city. Two hours later, the answer arrives: it’s yes. Since then, discussions have continued and the idea has gained ground in the small town of 7,000 inhabitants, until it has become a credible alternative in the eyes of the hospital unions and local elected officials.
