From 2035, new cars with internal combustion engines will not be able to be sold in the European Union. For now, it is, but recent developments in European markets could change things. Mercedes-Benz has even announced that it will not include new petrol or diesel engines in its portfolio from 2030. However, the market is changing dramatically.

In an interview with Die Zeit, Mercedes boss Ola Kellenius explains that the German company’s customers will be able to buy cars with an internal combustion engine after 2030. The Swede says that Mercedes wants to lay the foundations for an electric portfolio in all body classes during this decade, but there is no longer talk of stopping the production of diesel and gasoline cars or hybrids.

“Our product range is mainly based on customer requirements and will always be at the cutting edge of technology – this also includes internal combustion engines. There are also plug-in hybrids whose battery is sufficient for everyday emissions-free and where you can use the engine with internal combustion for long weekend trips,” emphasizes the Mercedes boss.

Considering the decline in electric car sales and the sudden end of government funding, the Swede is self-critical: “Perhaps there was a bit more optimism in the whole industry, now there is more realism.”

The company boss is for an objective discussion about the end of the internal combustion engine from 2035.

“The EU’s plan is in 2026 to first do an analysis and then see what is feasible and what is not,” concludes the Swedish manager.
