The professor lived to be 93 years old.
Professor Johan Galtung fell asleep quietly at Stabekk health center in Bærum on Saturday morning after a period of illness. This is confirmed by his son, Andreas Galtung, to NTB.
Galtung was a trained mathematician and sociologist from the University of Oslo, and he founded the Institute for Peace Research in 1959. Until 1970, he was director there, and he held the world’s first professorship in conflict and peace research.
Among other things, Galtung was behind the term “peace building”, and helped to mediate in several conflicts.
