The Fiamme Gialle of the Aeronaval Operations Department of the Guardia di Finanza of Civitavecchia, in close collaboration with the Marevivo Environmentalist Foundation, have completed an important recovery of a large fishing net abandoned on the seabed in front of the municipality of Civitavecchia. The net, approximately 200 meters long, which almost completely wrapped one side of the spur called ‘Coral Rock’, at a depth between 18 and 27 metres, was recovered by the Marevivo Underwater Division and by the Fiamme Gialle divers, with the with the help of a naval unit from the Civitavecchia Air and Naval Operations Department. The operation is specifically part of the various activities of the ‘Blue Days’ project of the Environmentalist Foundation which aims to safeguard the marine environment at 360 degrees. The so-called abandoned “ghost nets” represent a serious threat to biodiversity, they are considered real dangerous traps that put the fauna and flora of the marine environment at risk if left in this delicate ecosystem. The Marevivo Foundation, which has been working since 1985 for the protection of the sea and the environment against pollution and the study of biodiversity, promotes and enhances these activities by promoting sustainable development and raising awareness on all issues related to the Sea. The operation carried out demonstrates the great attention that the Aeronaval component of the Guardia di Finanza dedicates to the protection of the marine environment by making available the professionalism of specialized personnel and the technology of the naval vehicles at its disposal.
