US President Joe Biden may impose new sanctions on Russia after the death of opposition dissident Alexei Navalny, DPA reported.
“We already have sanctions, but we are considering imposing additional sanctions,” Biden told reporters.
Biden blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for Navalny’s death in a Siberian prison camp. The United States has already imposed several rounds of sanctions on Russia because of the war in Ukraine, which has been going on for almost two years now, DPA recalls.
With billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine being withheld by Republicans in the US Congress, the US president said he did not know if Navalny’s death would change the situation. “I hope so, but I’m not sure,” he added.
The behavior of Republicans in the House of Representatives (the lower house of the US Congress) blocking the aid package for Ukraine is “shocking”, Biden said, adding that he believes they are running away from the threat posed by Russia and from obligations to NATO , BTA reported.
The US president added that he is ready to meet with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson from the Republican Party to try to resolve the issue, DPA noted.
