The Cuban short film Habana Like, by actress and director Giselle Lominchar, won the online audience award at the Short of the Year festival.

When announcing the news, on the project’s official Instagram profile they took the opportunity to thank them for their support and congratulate the work team, the cast and the collaborators.

Likewise, they thanked the Promofest team and said they were happy for the distribution award, which they said was very important to them.

The Short of the Year award is an annual celebration that recognizes the best productions of the year in various categories ranging from directing, cinematography, editing and music, to screenplay and audience choice.

As a particularity, a documentary, a web series and a short film are selected as the grand awards, with five nominees in each category, explains the festival’s official website.

“Films, documentaries and music videos reviewed in Indie Shorts Mag are considered for this annual event which aims to identify, recognize and toast the work of the many impressive and talented members of the film fraternity around the world. world”, highlights the presentation text of the 2023 awards.

Habana Like, the short film

The story of the short film Habana Like is part, according to its author, of “a crazy sample of Cuban reality.” The audiovisual portrays the lives of four young people who see each other in a Wi-Fi park in the Cuban capital, while highlighting and criticizing the excessive and inappropriate use of social networks.

“In Havana, in a Wi-Fi park, four young people, alienated from everyday life, navigate the virtual world through their profiles; but they will come into conflict with the reality that surrounds them and with the image they wish to project to others,” says the synopsis of the short.

According to Giselle Lominchar in an interview with the Cuban media La Jiribilla, the short came at a time in her life when she also had a somewhat turbulent relationship with social networks.

“I had closed my Facebook account, and although at first it seemed like the right thing to do, I later realized that it had been a bit of an exaggerated reaction. Well, everything depends on the use that one gives to the networks,†he explained to the aforementioned media.

For her, the important thing was to bring those problems that come with the use of social networks to the Cuban reality, “where the differences between the virtual world and the real world are much more extreme for reasons that we all know.†.

The short film allowed him to “give prominence to young Cubans and explore our reality from the absurd.”

The cast was made up of young actors such as Amelia Fernández, Milton García, César Domínguez, Ingrid Lobaina and David Pereira, as well as the experienced Paula Alí and Maykel Amelia, among other artists.
