During the month of January, energy demand in Colombia experienced a significant increase of 7.87%, reaching a total of 6,897.24 GWh, according to data provided by the XM National Dispatch Center. The Caribbean region led energy consumption, registering a total of 1,920 GWh and an increase of 11.29% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The report reveals that the regulated market, made up of residential consumption and small businesses, was the main driver of this growth, presenting an increase of 11.85%, equivalent to 502.6 GWh. Meanwhile, consumption in the unregulated market, which encompasses industry and commerce, experienced a more moderate growth of 0.12%, equivalent to 3.34 GWh.

Juan Carlos Morales Ruiz, manager of the XM National Dispatch Center, highlighted that manufacturing industries and the exploitation of mines and quarries were the economic activities with the greatest participation in unregulated demand, representing 37.68% and 31.43 %, respectively.

Regarding the demand for electrical energy by region, Guaviare led the growth with an impressive increase of 27.38%, followed by Chocó with 14.46%, and the regions of Tolima, Huila and Caquetá with 13.61% . The Southern region recorded the lowest growth, with a modest 1.94%.

The commercial activity of Mining and Quarrying, with a significant 31.43% share in the unregulated market, experienced a growth of 2.85% in January compared to the same month of the previous year. These data reflect the dynamics of the energy sector in Colombia and the growing relevance of demand in the regulated market.
