The Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series is entering a decisive stage. It is of utmost importance for the participants, given the selection for the Olympics. Among the main license applicants is Nikita Simonov. The Azerbaijani athlete, who won the rings exercise at the stage in Cottbus, strengthened his position in the fight for a vacancy in Paris.
According to İdman.biz, after the World Cup in Antwerp, where the first licenses were awarded, all attention was focused on the World Cup stages. The series is notable for the fact that from there you can qualify for the Summer Games thanks to successful performance on individual events. It is no secret that not every athlete can complete the all-around; there are a number of star names whose crowning achievement is only one apparatus. The two best athletes based on the results of three of the four World Cup stages in each event will receive tickets to France.
Simonov has been demonstrating stable results on the rings for several years; he has repeatedly become a winner and prize-winner of stages. Having started this year with reaching the final and sixth place at the World Cup in Cairo, he became the hero of the World Cup in Cottbus. Already in qualifying, Nikita showed the best result, reaching the Top 8 from first place. In the final, he again received the highest mark and rightfully rose to the highest step of the podium.
Naturally, the result had a corresponding impact on the position of the Azerbaijani athlete in the ranking of the entire World Cup series. Cottbus gave him 30 points in addition to the 14 he earned for sixth place in Cairo. Thus, with 44 points, Simonov takes third place in the series in the rings exercise and has a chance to compete even for first place. Moreover, nothing separates him from the leader – just two points. North Korean Reng Yong is in first place, so it is quite possible for Nikita to improve his position.
In this sense, much will depend on the home World Cup, which will take place on March 7-10 at the National Gymnastics Arena. Last year Simonov won in Baku and now he has every chance to show his best again.
As for the entire World Cup series on individual apparatus, it will end on April 17-20 in Doha. After which the athletes who will qualify for the Olympics will be determined.
