Bulgaria has been designated as a free country in the report published today on the state of freedoms and rights in the world by the American non-governmental organization “Freedom House”, and our country collects 78 out of a total of 100 possible points.

The maximum number of points that a country can receive is 100, with a maximum of 60 of them calculated based on the level of civil rights, and a maximum of 40 – on political rights. According to these indicators, Bulgaria receives 32 and 46 points, respectively. The report notes a drop of one point compared to 2023, when the country received a total of 79 points.

Among the neighboring countries, Greece and Romania overtake Bulgaria, receiving respectively 85 and 83 points. Serbia, the Republic of North Macedonia with their 57 and 67 points are defined by Freedom House as partially free, while Turkey with 33 is defined as not free.

In the European Union, Hungary ranks last with 65 points – 24 for political and 41 for civil rights. Poland scores 80 points.

Russia is defined as “not free” with a score of 13 out of 100 points (4 points for political rights and 9 for civil liberties).

Ukraine receives 49 points and is described as “partly free” – 21 of the points come from political rights and 28 from civil liberties.

The Bulgaria section of the full Freedom in the World 2024 report has not yet been published by Freedom House, but the organization says it will do so as soon as the document becomes available.
