India’s legendary filmmaker, screenwriter Kumar Sahani has passed away. He breathed his last at a hospital in Kolkata at 11 pm on Saturday (February 24). He was 83 years old. Indian news agency PTI published the news.

Kumar Sahani’s close girlfriend is actress Mita Vasishta. Confirming the news of the director’s death, he told the news agency, ‘Kumar Sahani was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata due to old age problems. He died at 11 pm yesterday.’

Kumar Sahani was born on December 7, 1940 in Larkana, Sindh province of undivided India. Studied at Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. There he was a direct student of Bengali director Ritvik Ghatak.

Kumar Sahani became known by producing acclaimed movies like ‘Maya Darpan’, ‘Taranga’, ‘Kasba’ in a career of 6 decades. As a director, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Andrei Tarkovsky influenced his films. Kumar Sahani was different from contemporary filmmakers in storytelling.

In 1972, Kumar Sahani produced ‘Maya Darpan’ based on the story of Hindi novelist Nirmal Varma. It won the National Film Award of India.
