Accidents occurring in Jaffna are more than the levels recommended by the World Health Organization. University Faculty of Medicine Dean Professor Surendra Kumar has expressed concern.

In this regard, he further said, “An eight-storey building for the Faculty of Medicine has been constructed in Jaffna with the financial assistance of the Ministry of Education.

The land for the said building was given by the city council in 2015. Education and research services will be held in the said building.

Massive impact

Also, teaching of students and treatment of patients will also be carried out.

Also, trainings to provide modern training for students, doctors and nurses will also be provided.

The challenge for us to carry out these services is the long standing buses. We are not targeting anyone.

However, the buses parked in front of our building now have a huge impact on the advancement of our medical services and especially on the health of the patients.

Jaffna Municipal Council, District Secretariat, Governor’s Office will carry out the project called Jaffna Health City in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

Traffic congestion is a nuisance

The Sri Lankan staff of the World Health Organization and the staff in South East Asia will visit in April to carry out the project.

They will undertake work projects to transform Jaffna into a healthy city within the next two years.

Hence, traffic congestion is seen as a hindrance to keep the city healthy and clean in the future as well.

The operations of this transport are disruptive and prone to accidents.

Accidents occurring within our borders exceed the levels recommended by the World Health Organization.

Therefore, everyone should come forward to control the traffic congestion and keep the city clean,” he said.
