The mining company Anglo American acquired the remaining 45% of the hectares of the Los Nogales Nature Sanctuary, located in the commune of Lo Barnechea, in the Metropolitan Region.
The firm already directly managed 55% of the land, which has nearly 11 thousand hectares, and the objective of the purchase is to consolidate the administration of the Sanctuary with a focus on conservation.
It’s all part of their action plans associated with the development of Nature-Based Solutions (SbN). In this context, the acquisition of the remaining percentage of the Sanctuary has the purpose of support the conservation of biodiversity in the Metropolitan Region.
Regarding this transaction, the company’s vice president of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Juan Pablo Schaeffersaid that: “At Anglo American, we have very specific goals around climate change and biodiversity conservation. As part of our Sustainable Mining Planwe have the goal of generating a positive effect in nature by 2030. In this sense, the conservation of the Los Nogales Nature Sanctuary will continue to be our priority“.
The Los Nogales Nature Sanctuary
The history of the Sanctuary dates back to July 15, 1973when the Council of National Monuments declared it with that category. This sector covers 11,025 hectares of the commune of Lo Barnechea and represents a 6,4% of the total area of sanctuaries of the Metropolitan Region.
It is also an enclave of biodiversity protectiongiven that contributes to the maintenance of diverse ecosystems, in addition to providing numerous ecosystem services such as water supply, air quality regulation, CO2 capture y maintenance of the muleteer culture.
After the acquisition, Anglo American expands its control over said land, since it is part of the direct management of the Sanctuary since 2001owning 32% of the property and, acquiring during 2022 another 23% of the site.
Anglo American and its work in protecting the sanctuary
The mining company has promoted different actions to contribute to its protectionfor example:
- High Andean Wetlands Monitoring and Conservation Project.
- Biodiversity Vulnerability Assessment Study to Climate Change.
- Sustainable Livestock Pilot.
- Sanctuary Management Plan.
As well as important research alliances with the University of Chile, the Universidad Mayor, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Biota, Wildlife Conservation Society and Capital Natural, among other institutions, with the aim of achieve integrated and effective management of the Los Nogales Sanctuary.

He also explained that the Management Plan has a horizon of 10 yearsand that these measures will not only go to the conservation of its meadows, streams, streams and forests, but also to the inhabitants of the Metropolitan Regionwhere the surface area of protected areas per inhabitant It is the lowest in the country.
