A cook named Jewel Gazi was killed while trying to escape from the sixth floor of the Green Cozy Cottage, a multi-storied building in the capital’s Bailey Road, after a fire broke out.

Jewel Gazi’s nephew Rakib described the tragic accident when he came to Dhaka Medical College Hospital mortuary on Friday (March 1).

He said, our house is in Kalapara police station of Patuakhali district. Uncle has a baby boy and a one-year-old daughter. My uncle (Jewel Ghazi) and I worked as cooks in the restaurant on the sixth floor of that building. At night when we were working together, suddenly the electricity went out. Later when I heard there was a fire, everyone started crying in fear and trying to get out. But, there was no way out.

Rakib said, after the fire, smoke was coming from all around inside the restaurant. The fire was slowly increasing and the heat was intense. After that we break the window glass. Then I tried to get down by the rope hanging outside and somehow fell down. After me, uncle tried to get down by that wire.

He said, uncle held him and stood on an AC after going down some distance. After that, he tried to get down by holding the water pipe. At that moment he collapsed from the pipe. We were informed that he died this morning when he was immediately brought to the hospital.
