New Delhi: Modi government has taken many major decisions to develop the semiconductor chip ecosystem in the country. These include approving Tata Group’s facility in Jagiroad, Assam. The central government has approved Tata Electronics’ proposal to build a state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly and test facility in Assam with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore. The facility will create more than 27,000 direct and indirect jobs. AI will also meet the global demand for semiconductor chips in industrial and consumer electronics. The project is in line with the Semiconductor Policy of the Government of India and the Electronics Policy of the Government of Assam, which will fuel the industrialization of North-East India. Tata Electronics, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, is developing three core technologies – Wire Bond, Flip Chip and Integrated Systems. Will focus on packaging (ISP). These technologies are important for use in automotive, communications and network infrastructure. The facility aims to meet the global demand for semiconductor chips in AI, industrial and consumer electronics. Semiconductors are the most important building block for AI-based digitization. Tata Group said in a statement that the construction of the semiconductor facility in Assam will start this year. Its first phase is expected to be operational by mid-2025.

Big step towards becoming a superpower! Approval to set up 3 semiconductor plants, Tata Group will enter the field

how much will be the demand

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the global electronics manufacturing market is looking for a secure and flexible supply chain. By setting up a semiconductor fab and assembly and test project in India, Tata Electronics aims to enable global customers to build a significant part of their semiconductor value chain in the country. The project will contribute to technology-driven industrialization and employment generation in North-East India. The Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has developed comprehensive central and state semiconductor policies. This project has been made possible with the support of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, India Semiconductor Mission and Government of Assam.

Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD, Tata Electronics, said this investment will establish India as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub and promote the development of a domestic ecosystem. Adequate water and green energy will be available for the Jagiroad facility. Also, it is close to countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore. These countries are considered hubs of semiconductor packaging and test. The global semiconductor industry is expected to grow to one trillion dollars by 2030. The demand for semiconductors in India can reach 110 billion dollars. India’s entry into semiconductor manufacturing will reduce risks in the global supply chain and India’s role in the global semiconductor industry will be important.
