A cookery show rocked the valley of the Smolyan village of Shiroka Laka. Ensembles from all over the country chased away the evil forces with scary masks and unimaginable noise from vats and tumblers in front of the eyes of hundreds of tourists.
This year, the traditional Kuker games “Pesponedelnik” in Shiroka Laka coincided with the National Holiday. The custom of “Pesponedelnik” is ancient and symbolizes the birth of new life and the banishment of evil. The tradition in the Smolyan village is that in the evening the kukers, called “pesyatsi”, sound the Shiroka Laka, going around the houses, chasing away evil. The broad-faced grebes are dressed in woolen coats, sheepskins for googles and a goatskin mask, with creepy eyes made of red cloth. Tumblers, chans and tatralkas hang from their leather belts.
