Six fighters from an armed group were killed in Russia during a counter-terrorist operation in the city of Karabulak in the Russian autonomous republic of Ingushetia, TASS reported, which Reuters also referred to. The identities of those killed are being established, operational services in the region report.

“According to preliminary data, six fighters have been killed, the site is being inspected,” said a TASS source.

The special action in the city has been completed, but law enforcement continues to operate in the mode of a counter-terrorist operation. It covers four streets in the city, the local operations headquarters told media representatives last night, BTA reported.

The information center of the National Anti-Terrorist Committee of Russia told TASS that the Special Operations Forces of Russia (Spetsnaz) discovered and blocked a bandit group in a residence. Residents of the area were evacuated to a school building. Reuters reported that the suspected militants opened fire from the residence on the law enforcement officers.

Ingushetia is the smallest autonomous republic of the Russian Federation. It is located in the Caucasus region, between North Ossetia and Chechnya, and its population is about half a million people.

For almost a decade until 2017, Russian security forces fought armed attacks by a number of Islamist groups in Ingushetia, Dagestan and Chechnya, Reuters said.
